ASPCA | Cold Weather Tips

Cold Weather Tips

Brrrr…it’s cold outside!  The following guidelines will help you protect your companion animals when the mercury dips.

  1. Keep your cat inside. Outdoors, felines can freeze, become lost or be stolen, injured or killed. Cats who are allowed to stray are exposed to infectious diseases, including rabies, from other cats, dogs and wildlife.

  2. During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.

  3. Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm—dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags.

  4. Thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice.

  5. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to completely dry him before taking him out for a walk. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.

  6. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

  7. Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper-train him inside. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.

  8. Does your dog spend a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities? Increase his supply of food, particularly protein, to keep him—and his fur—in tip-top shape.

  9. Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center more information.

  10. Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.

Hiram the Chanukah Candle

Hiram the Hanukkah Candle Had a very Shiny Light
And if you ever saw it You would even say it was bright
All of the other candles Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Hiram Join in any Hanukkah Games

Then one foggy Hannukah eve The Rabbi came to say
"Hiram with your Light so bright Won't you lead our service tonight"
Then all the other candles loved him As they shouted out with Glee
Hiram the Hanukkah candle You'll go down in History!

To the tune of "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer".

Can't remember where we got this, except that it was from an early Google search! Thanks Google!

MPs to lobby Transport Minister over Immingham Bypass pledge

MPs to lobby Transport Minister over Immingham Bypass pledge

MP Martin Vickers
MP Martin Vickers

NORTH East Lincolnshire MPs are to meet with Transport Minister Norman Baker next month to discuss funding options for the proposed Immingham Bypass.

As previously reported, the A18-A180 link road is on a list of 22 projects for which local authorities will have to bid for a share of a £600 million pot of Government funding.

The news was announced last month during the Coalition Government's Transport Statement, in which it was also revealed that the planned upgrade to the A160 would be delayed until at least 2015.

Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers said Transport Secretary Philip Hammond had hinted that an increased contribution from North East Lincolnshire Council to the estimated £7 million scheme would improve the chances of the project being given the go-ahead.

Now, he intends to raise the matter during a meeting with Mr Baker. The meeting will be attended by Mr Vickers, Great Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell, Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy and Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin.

Keep checking your Telegraph for further updates.

We have heard all this before. It's on, it's off... but like everything else, it is at best uncertain. This is Immingham after all. Will they ever learn that we don't believe them any more? When did a politician keep any promise of importance to us? One of the biggest container ports anywhere and no bypass! If we were anywhere else we would have had it many moons ago!

Famed archaeologist dies in accident | World | News | Toronto Sun

JERUSALEM - Ehud Netzer, a leading Israeli archaeologist who is credited with having found the tomb of the biblical King Herod, has died after falling during a dig at an ancient palace, hospital staff said on Friday.

Netzer, 76, died late Thursday, days after suffering serious injuries when a railing gave way at Herodium, an archaelogical site in the West Bank between Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

"His tragic death is a loss to his family, researchers of Jewish heritage and science and archaeology," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.

Netzer made headlines in 2007 when he announced he had solved a 2,000-year-old mystery and discovered the location of the tomb of Herod the Great, Roman-anointed King of the Jews.

Herod rebuilt the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and the Gospel of Matthew says he ordered the "Massacre of the Innocents", the killing of male infants in Jesus's birthplace of Bethlehem out of fear of losing his throne to a new monarch.

Netzer had searched for Herod's tomb at the desert fortress of Herodium for about 30 years before he found a smashed sarcophagus that he said was that of the king, who ruled Judea from about 37 BC until his death in 4 BC.

In 2008, he went on to unearth two tombs believed to have held a wife and daughter-in-law of Herod.

More recently, Netzer was involved in excavating a lavish theatre box at Herodium, capable of seating 400 people.

We send our condolences to his family.

Our Government has gone mad

Who in their right mind would give their navy 2 new aircraft carriers and take away their planes?
Answer:  NOBODY!

Who did give their navy 2 new aircraft carriers and take away their planes?
Answer: THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT.

What kind of insanity is this? No more new planes for 10 years for these spanking new carriers! The flexibility of a navy with air strike capability would be gone forever! Our ground based forces are nowhere near as versatile! (And that's just the start!)

They expect us to trust them to look after the economy, the sick and disabled, the poor, our industry, ...

They must think we are stupid.

Well Mr Cameron I was not born yesterday and I can see you have no idea what you are doing. What I want to know is will we have a country left in 5 years time? If we do will we recognise it?
The way you are frightening the sick on benefits these days we are likely to see them begging on the streets because the state has labelled them as scroungers.

Wake up Mr Cameron and speak up Mr Clegg! If you still want a country to govern in 5 years time start talking sense and learn how to do joined up thinking. Stop picking on easy targets like playground bullies and tackle the problems at their roots. The whole money system needs an overhaul and all the fat cats there need to be relieved of their assets!

If you've been on Twitter today, your news feed was likely taken over by people declaring their Twifficiency rating, which claims to measure your efficiency on Twitter. Here's an unsolicited tip: If you're worried about efficiency, stay off Twitter. First it was mildly annoying (why is this nonsense a trending topic?). Then things got spammy as users quickly realized their scores were being tweeted without their permission. The mastermind behind the whole thing turned out to be a 17-year-old IT developer from Dundee, Scotland, named James Cunningham. And, like a teenager, he was pretty emo about the whole thing. "It wasnt mean [sic] to be used by this many people. Nothing I do ever catches on so it wasnt a concern," he tweeted. Don't be so glum, James. This might end up earning you a job in the highly specialized field of social media.

MPs’ expenses: disgraced MPs obtain secret refunds

A grandee who charged taxpayers for servants’ quarters and a minister who claimed for dog food are among 23 MPs who secretly clawed back cash repaid during the expenses scandal.

The payments were made last summer at the height of the furore over MPs’ expenses, as the public vented its anger about the widespread abuse of the system.

However, it has emerged that since then nearly two dozen current and former MPs have quietly asked for the money to be returned, after receiving lower than expected demands from the House of Commons authorities to repay overclaimed expenses.

Among them was Sir John Butterfill, a former Tory MP denied a peerage by David Cameron earlier this year after being caught up in a lobbying scandal, who had more than £15,000 returned after he claimed for the costs of the servants’ quarters at his country mansion.

Cheryl Gillan, the Welsh Secretary, was repaid £4.47 – the same amount she returned after it emerged that she had claimed for dog food on her second home expenses.

The refunds followed the audit of all MPs’ expenses carried out last year by Sir Thomas Legg, which resulted in more than half being made to return money to the taxpayer.

There was criticism at the time of the audit, because, under the terms of his remit, Sir Thomas was required to make his findings against the rules at the time – which have since been roundly discredited as being too generous.

He did not take into account claims which were viewed by the public as morally wrong – such as the use of legal loopholes to avoid paying property taxes, which many MPs exploited to make tens of thousands of pounds of profit.

Many MPs had already made repayments over claims which had attracted public anger, often making great fanfare about returning money to the taxpayer.

However, after the audit, the Commons authorities secretly wrote to MPs whose Legg demands were lower than the amounts they had previously returned.

A Commons official said: "They were asked to confirm whether or not they would require a refund."

Following a Freedom of Information request by a Sunday newspaper, it has now emerged that 23 MPs took advantage of the opportunity to claw back sums ranging from Mrs Gillan’s £4.47 to £15,114.30 for Sir John.

The former Tory backbencher claimed thousands of pounds in council taxes for the servants’ quarters at his six bedroom house.

A spokesman for the Welsh Secretary said: “How this figure was reached is a matter for the committee.”

Other MPs who accepted refunds include Iris Robinson, the disgraced former Democratic Unionist MP who stood down after channelling money from party donors to her 19-year-old lover, who received £300.

Ann and Alan Keen, who were dubbed Mr and Mrs Expenses after declaring that a house in her constituency which they left unoccupied was their main property, allowing them to claim second home expenses on a luxury apartment beside the Thames, each received nearly £1,000.

Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, applied for a £138.80 refund, while former Labour ministers Geoff Hoon, Chris Bryant and John Reid all received money back.

The full list is:

1. Sir John Butterfill £15,114

2. John Reid: £4,604.63

3. Sally Keeble £3,737.74

4. Richard Younger Ross £3,170.92

5. John Cummings £2,727.06

6. Christine mCafferty £2,086.75

7. Joyce Quin £1,504

8. Chris Bryant £1,303.74

9. Joan Walley £1,303

10. Ann Keen £976.86

11. Alan Keen £976.85

12. William McCrea £878.79

13. Stewart Jackson £876

14. Bill Olner £660.97

15. Roger Berry £635.25

16. Paul Flynn £440.87

17. Jon Cruddas £319.94

18. Iris Robinson £299.84

19. Geoff Hoon £245.47

20. Wayne David £189.98

21. Andrew Lansley £138.80

22. Lembit Öpik £40

23. Cheryl Gillan £4.47

Full marks to the Telegraph. Are they the only people who care about mis-spent public money? I know ordinary people care. it is our money after all.
What happens when an ordinary person tries to report possible mis-spending?
Have you tried? I would love to know what happened.
I have been trying to report a possible mis-spend for the last 3 years and have yet to find anyone I can report it to as more than one government department is involved. Has anyone any ideas how we can make our voices heard. We cannot afford all this waste in the UK.

Please post here.

All 1,600 workers at North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus have been offered voluntary redundancy

All 1,600 workers at North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus have been offered voluntary redundancy – in what has been heralded as "a big step" towards the abolition of the organisation.

As reported, the Government is axing all 152 primary care trusts in the UK, putting their responsibilities on to GPs and borough councils.

In the meantime, the North East Lincolnshire trust has been told to slash its spending by £3.8 million by the handover in 2013.

Although a spokeswoman for the CTP was keen to point out that no staff are currently facing compulsory redundancy, she confirmed every employee had been invited to "register an interest" in stepping down voluntarily.

The option will also be open to those entitled to take early retirement, and will run alongside a general cost cutting drive across the trust.

Other cost cutting measures being put in place include cutting back on administration costs, by increasing the use of "paperless" agendas and other notices – as well as reducing the number of people being referred to the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.

However, the spokeswoman said the impact on patient care would be "minimal".

For more local reaction to the plans, see today's Grimsby Telegraph.

The world has gone crazy - or is it just the coalition government?

Medieval job revived in Immingham
Peter Rhodes
Peter Rhodes has been in the job for six months.

The local town council has appointed a Lengthsman.

Peter Rhodes is responsible for cleaning up litter, keeping hedges and ditches tidy and tackling graffiti.

The position dates back to the medieval era when parish councils employed men to maintain an area or length of road.

The post died out in the late 1880s when road maintenance became the responsibility of county councils.

Many local authorities have revived the position over the last few years.

Mr Rhodes is halfway through a 12 month trial to assess the impact of his work on the local community.

12,100 illegal cigarettes seized in raid on Immingham house

12,100 illegal cigarettes seized in raid on Immingham house

12,100 illegal cigs seized in raid on Immingham house

A TIP-OFF from a member of the public led to the seizure of more than 12,100 illegal cigarettes from an Immingham house.

Cash was also uncovered in the raid, carried out after Trading Standards officers joined forces with Humberside Police to carry out an undercover test purchase.

Details of the raid have been released today as it is revealed that illegal cigarette trade is increasing crime rates in North East Lincolnshire and encouraging children to take up smoking.

And members of the public have been urged to help stamp out the trade in illegal tobacco in North East Lincolnshire by texting the word CIGS to 82055 together with detail.

The latest investigation was launched when North East Lincolnshire Council's tobacco control officer received information that illegal cigarettes were being traded from the home in Spring Street.

The raid on July 21 led to the discovery of thousands of L&M cigarettes and 8.25 kilograms of Turner's rolling tobacco - which had been smuggled into the country illegally to avoid tax - alongside £2,500 in cash.

No arrests were made in connection with the haul, although a man not living at the address was arrested and handed a fixed-penalty fine of £80 for a public order offence.

Councillor Steve Beasant, portfolio holder for community safety, neighbourhoods and customer services, said: "This is an excellent result in our fight against people who illegally trade in smuggled and fake tobacco products.

"People who profit by trading in illegal cigarettes are ripping off the public purse and they are often supplying untested products which carry bigger health risks than legitimate tobacco."

It was the second largest raid made by the tobacco control officer since the post was created in autumn last year. In total, 67,000 cigarettes and 27kg of rolling tobacco have been seized in that time.

The council is now collecting further evidence before prosecuting.

Figures show that 21 per cent of smokers in the region have bought illegal tobacco at some point – read more about the trade and its affect on health and legitimate traders, in today's Grimsby Telegraph.

Gaza Missile Hits, UK Press Misses

BBC: A Case Study in Bias

The BBC demonstrated exactly what is wrong with its coverage of Israel. In its headline Hamas fighter killed in Israel air strikes on Gaza, could the BBC have found a more sanitised way to describe a terrorist bomb maker and senior Hamas leader?

But it gets worse - the BBC does not just underplay the effects of rockets from Gaza, but fails to even mention that this particular attack employed the more powerful and longer-range Grad missile:

Rocket fire from Gaza has reduced in the past year after Hamas reined in attacks, but sporadic fire from other militant groups continues.

Correspondents say such attacks are almost always ineffective, with rockets mostly landing in open fields.

Who are these nameless "correspondents" that the BBC relies on make a judgement on just what constitutes an effective rocket attack? Even when such rockets have failed to hit a target, the act of firing them at Israeli civilians forced to take cover in shelters, disrupting everyday life, is terrifying enough irrespective of casualty figures.

In fact, approximately 110 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israeli territory since the beginning of 2010, and over 400 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel since the end of Operation Cast Lead.

All of these rockets are fired with the express intention to kill and maim Israeli civilians - something that the BBC seems incapable or unwilling to acknowledge. As such, the BBC turns a blind eye to the reality and distorts the truth.

And just to make the point that the BBC is more concerned with a seeming imbalance in the casualty figures, its report states:

One Thai farmer in Israel has been killed in the past year.

Dozens of Palestinians, some of them civilians, have been killed in attacks from Israel over the same period.

Using a simplistic description lacking in any context, the BBC succeeds in ensuring that Israel comes across as an aggressor by downplaying Palestinian rocket attacks, removing their murderous intent and portraying Israel as the killer of Palestinians. Thus Israeli self-defence is given the same moral equivalence as the terrorist acts emanating from Gaza.

The BBC has, once again, demonstrated its insidious form of anti-Israel bias.

Isn't it about time the BBC made the effort to report what is really happening?

What a wonderful crew. The unseasonal force 9 gales made the minicruise a trip of a lifetime, but not the way we had imagined! The crew really cared about us and worked fer beyond the call of duty to make us feel happy about all the problems. The captain in particular made such a difference. We knew he tried his utmost to get us into port only a little late. The Port authority had berthed another ship in our spot and they refused to move for us. I wish I knew who they were! It was ultimately down to their captain.

We had the restaurant almost to ourselves on Wednesday. Not being the seasick type, we seemed to be almost the only passengers still eating! The food was scrumptious and we really enjoyed it. The entertainers, too in the bar were fantastic. Singing and dancing in a force 8 is no mean feat! Well done folks. And Thanks!

Not many dolphins to see that trip, only two, but they really made it for me. Storms don't ruin their day. They were riding the bow wave as only dolphins can.

Lincoln Castle: Agent says Humber ferry rescue stalled by owner and North East Lincolnshire Council

LAST DAYS? Ongoing work to dismantle the Lincoln Castle. Pictures: Rick Byrne

INVESTORS' attempts to save the Lincoln Castle were repeatedly stalled by its owner and the local council, it has been claimed.

Speaking exclusively to the Mail, the agent who was tasked with selling the former Humber ferry claimed five different people were "seriously interested" in buying the boat.

But Bob Shore claimed that owner Colin Johnson refused several of their attempts to buy the vessel, which is berthed in Grimsby.

He also claimed North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) could have saved the ship, as a clause in its licence meant the authority would be offered the chance to buy the boat before anyone else.

His comments come after businessman Stephen Caunter made a public appeal to Mr Johnson to allow him to buy the boat.

Mr Caunter claimed when he was unable to raise the £60,000 bond requested by NELC on top of the £20,000 asking price in three days, Mr Johnson cancelled the deal.

Mr Caunter then offered the money directly to NELC for the authority to purchase the vessel and sell it on to Mr Caunter – a deal the council refused.

Mr Shore, who was instructed to advertise the boat in July last year, said: "The responsibility for this outcome lies fairly and squarely with North East Lincolnshire Council for not taking the option to buy the boat.

"They had decided it would be a risk to ratepayers and that they wouldn't be able to take that chance, but Stephen came up with a solution to that problem and they still refused."

Mr Caunter, a businessman specialising in restoration and maintenance, planned to buy and restore the boat.

He said: "I just fell in love with it, but the owner did not seem to want to do the deal.

"It wouldn't be to anyone's advantage to scrap it. I strongly urge Mr Johnson to reconsider my offer to buy it."

A spokesperson for NELC said: "In the current climate of public spending cuts, it would not be right for the local authority to burden council taxpayers with the bill for the Lincoln Castle."

Mr Johnson's brother Peter, who is speaking on his behalf, did not respond to a request for a comment from the Mail.

Eight Christians Killed in Nigerian Muslim Attacks

Washington, D.C. (July 6, 2010)– International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that this past weekend Muslims attacked Christian villages and killed at least eight Christians in Kaduna and Plateau States of northern Nigeria.

On the night of July 3, several Muslims attacked Kizachi village in Kaduna State and killed five Christians, including a primary school teacher and mother of six children. The Muslims also burned down five Christian homes.

Nigerian sources told ICC that the police had stopped protecting the village on July 2 after the government failed to pay their salaries.

In the second attack, on the night of July 4, 200 Muslims armed with guns and machetes invaded Ganawuri community, near Jos. Three Christians are feared dead.

A spokesperson of the Nigerian military’s Special Task Force (STF), Lt. Col. Kingsley Umoh, stated that the attackers were suspected herdsmen from neighboring communities of Kaduna State.

According to Umoh, STF received a distress call which they responded to, and engaged in a fire fight with the attackers. One of the attackers received gunshot wounds and six were arrested. Those arrested have since been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the state police command for further investigations.

This latest violence came on the heels of a March 7 jihad attack against Christians in Jos in which over 500 mainly women and children were murdered. It is estimated that many more thousands of Christians have been killed in northern Nigeria since the introduction of Sharia law in 2001.

Jonathan Racho, ICC’s Regional Manager for Africa, said “We are outraged by the latest killings of Christians in northern Nigeria. Once again, Nigerian officials have failed to provide needed security for the citizens of Kaduna and Plateau States. We urge Nigerian authorities to quickly bring all the perpetrators of the attacks to justice and fully investigate the lapse in security.”

Somali Islamists Execute Christian Convert

Washington, D.C. (July 7, 2010)– International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that members of the Al-Qaeda linked Somali Islamist group, Al-Shabaab, publicly executed a Christian convert from Islam in the in Hudur district, Somalia on July 1st.

Muhammad Guul Hashim Idiris, a Christian convert from Islam, was traveling by land from Kalafo, an Ethiopian border town, to visit his mother in Mogadishu.

A fellow passenger recognized his Christian background and asked him if he thought the prophet Muhammad was a genuine messenger from God. Idiris responded by saying, “If I thought so, I would have believed in him instead of the Messiah.

Once they reached the Hudur district, a stronghold of the Al- Shabaab terror network, the Muslim man reported Idiris to Al-Shabaab and had him detained on June 27th. Idiris was accused of insulting the prophet Muhammad. It is a serious sin to consider Muhammad not to be a genuine prophet and it warrants the death penalty.

Sheik Adan Yare, the Al-Shabab governor of the Bakol region, spoke to the press on July 1st and said, “ Our holy warriors have today, on July 1st at 11: 45 am, executed in front of angry Muslim witnesses a young man whose name was Muhammad Guul Hashim Idiris who insulted our beloved prophet.

The execution, which took place at a make-shift soccer stadium, was attended by hundreds of people, including school children who were forced to watch the execution.

The martyr had been married since January 26th and is survived by his pregnant widow.

Idiris’ paternal uncle and a Christian convert from Islam spoke to ICC from Addis Ababa, calling the Al-Shabaab execution “further evidence of Al-Shabaab’s attempt to eliminate Christianity from among Somali people in the Horn of Africa.

Jonathan Racho, ICC’s Regional Manager for Africa, said “We are deeply saddened by yet another execution of a Somali Christian. Al-Shabaab and Islamic extremist groups in Somalia have repeatedly vowed to wipe out Christians from Somalia. Al-Shabaab has murdered several Christians, chopped off the hands of Muslims suspected of crimes and even stoned Muslim women to death for allegedly committing adultery. The cruel and inhumane action of Al-Shabaab shows its complete disregard for human life.”

BBC News - Retirement age 'should be scrapped' says an Age UK survey

Most people want employers to lose the right to tell people when to retire, according to a survey by the charity, Age UK.

It says the government should scrap forced retirement immediately, currently set at 65 years for both men and women.

The survey showed more than two thirds thought the principle of forced retirement was wrong.

Age UK is asking the government to make clear its plans for the retirement age.

Under the current system, employers can tell any member of staff to leave work once they pass their 65th birthday, whether the individual wants to stop work or not.

One who did not want to retire was John White, a 69 year-old postman.

He was forced to leave work in July last year, despite the fact he loved his job and was good at it - a fact confirmed by his manager.

He points out that the higher-paid professions, such as politicians, doctors and judges, can keep on working past 65 - the age at which the state pension is paid to men.

'Speculation and confusion'

Women had been allowed to draw theirs from age 60, but that is now slowly changing to catch up with men.

The coalition government has said it intends to scrap the forced retirement age, but has given no guidance as to when it plans to do this.

Age UK, formerly known as Help the Aged and Age Concern, is calling on ministers to end what it calls "speculation and confusion" among employers and workers and set a date to end forced retirement.

The organisation says tens of thousands of workers were forced to retire last year.

"Forcing people in later life out of the labour market when they want to work, save for their pensions and pay taxes, is nonsense," Michelle Mitchell, charity director of Age UK, said.

"It makes a mockery of the Government's plans to help people work longer."

Age UK said Tuesday's Budget offered ministers the opportunity to say "loud and clear" when they were going to abolish "forced" retirement.
